Front cover analysis NME.
The masthead of the magazine is bold and in capitals. It also has a red background and white coloured font. This makes it stand out more and gives more clarity showing the name of the magazine publishers. However as the masthead is in the corner the magazine wants the reader to concentrate more on the picture and heading. The front cover of the magazine contains a three colour scheme which is red white and black. These colours work well with each other as they contrast also making the magazine noticeable to the eye. The main heading is at the centre of the page which is “bloody hell”. This is in a red coloured font in a white background. The font of the cover is generally the same. Below this there is a sentence describing the great achievements that the band recently had. This goes well with the image of them looking skilled and looking proud. The cover star is a band call royal blood. Their clothing consists of wearing black all over, again contrasting with the white background colour of the magazine and the red font. The shot type is a medium long shot because the reader can see the bodies of the band members but only up to their waste length. The cover stars have serious faces showing that they are professionals additionally they appear sophisticated with their clothing. The mise en scene only consists of their clothing with a black belt and black and white cap for accessories. Towards the bottom of the page there are other artists’ names giving an insight for what the content of the magazine might be about.

page NME.
The contents page consists of 1 page. The 3 colour scheme of
black, red and white continues on the contents page. The contents page is separated
into three columns which are aligned making it easy and clear for the reader to
read. Each column has a category; the first category is called regulars (in
capitals and in red and white). This category contains the usual content of the
magazine including subcategories like radar which show new artists and also
reviews which have song reviews of albums and songs. The second column and
category is called features. This is in white font and has a black background.

Double Page Spread NME.
The DPS that I analysed shows a band called Kasabian. The image of them covers both pages. The shot type is a medium long shot. The mise en scene doesn’t have many things as the props are just a belt and a chain. The lighting is fairly bright portraying the positive mood of the DPS. The clothing is a darker colour contrasting with the light grey shade making it easier to read for the reader. At the bottom of the page there is a pull quote: “It’ll definitely be bombastic”, this is used as the main heading. The word bombastic entices the reader and creates motions of excitement. Below it says Kasabian celebrating 10 years since the release of the debut album. This is a teaser to what the whole article will be like. On the right of the DPS it says the week, this is the subcategory from the contents page which shows music events that happened this week. The DPS uses a three colour scheme of white black and yellow. This works well as the different colours diverge well. The article is contained in one column and the writing itself is not much. This is because the publishes want the reader to concentrate on the positive mood of the band and the celebration of 10 years since their debut album. The content of the article links with the positive mood of the image of Kasabian as in the few first lines of the article the word “triumphant” has been used and the image shows them smiling and laughing. There’s also a drop cap at the start of the article which is an effective way of getting the reader’s attention because they add personality and visual strength to the page. The content of the article is not very formal and there’s colloquial language with the swear words d**k and f*****s. This demonstrates that the target audience for this article and for the whole magazine to be young adults and teens. The article consist of many quotes from a band, this is interesting for the reader as it gives an insight into what Kasabian think and how they react to certain things.

You have started some analysis here Rohan, but you are a little confused with terminology and are a little descriptive. Masthead is not the publisher but the title of the magazine, also main text on the cover is the main cover line. Analysis should go beyond describing the image and text and to explain why it is the way it is, usually linking to the genre and target audience - as in everything is created to appeal to them. Also try to make links between cover lines and images and to look at language style with contents and DPS. You start to do all of this but add more detail.
