Front Cover
Analysis of Kerrang!
The front cover of kerrang! Has many things going which
might indicate that this magazine is about rock because the style of rock music
is loud and all over the place. The masthead of the magazine is in bright
yellow and is large and in capitals. This catches the reader’s attention
straight away also linking it with the rock-pop style of music. There is a
three colour scheme consisting of red, yellow, and blue. These colours are energetic
vibrant colours that again attract the audience’s attention. The cover star is
Gerard way. He is wearing a blue suit which he is wearing in a scruffy way.
This goes well with the magazine because firstly the blue matches the three
colour scheme and its links with the pop genre of the magazine. There are many
cover lines of various artists, this gives the reader an opportunity to briefly
view what the content of the magazine will have, therefore saving time. The heading
of the magazine is towards the right making more space for the cover star it
states “The music that saved Gerard Way’s Life”. This gives an audience an
interesting read as it will potentially talk about a celebrity’s life.
Contents
Analysis of Kerrang!
The title of the
contents page is simply contents with an edgy font again linking it to rock.
Below it, it says “learn to fly” and in brackets “through the mag”. This is a
joke to try to enlighten the reader and putting them in a good mood to read
through whole magazine. The whole contents page is separated into three columns
making it easier for the reader’s eye. The contents page of Kerrang is divided
into many sections. This makes it clearer for the read to choose which sections
they want to read first saving time. The sections are separated into news, feedback,
features, shots, lives, albums, gig guide and ultimate rock star test. The
three colour scheme is similar to the front cover but in this one it is red,
yellow and black. The page numbers are red allowing it to be simple for the
reader to locate each page. There are also images of standout artists which are
featured in the magazine including the foo fighters. The images are of medium
close up shots. Additionally the contents page has an editor’s letter giving an
overview of the whole magazine and towards the left it has a positive section
where it shows some of the audience that helped contribute towards this
magazine.
Double Page Spread of Kerrang!
The
double page spread that I looked at is a coalition of two bands: all time low
and you me at six.
The main title is in bold and yellow making it stand out and
look exciting. Underneath title there is a summary of the article so the reader
can get an insight if the reader does not have time to read the whole article.
The three page colour scheme is still there yellow, black and red. The article is separated into three columns again making it easier for the reader to read. The main
image is on the left which show two band members from the two different groups
showing a rock symbol with their fingers and sticking their tongue out. The
clothes they are wearing are all black symbolizing rock and contrasting with
the light lighting and background. This associates with the rock genre. There
is a pull quote in the article in black font and in caps: “ALL TIME LOW ARE HILARIOUS, WHEREAS I’M A MISERABLE ENGLISH BASTARD” this was said by Josh
Franceschi. This name is in a jittery font and in red and white similar to the masthead
of the cover. The contents of the article is mainly informal and consist of
colloquial language similar to the large pull quote. This shows that the target audience are young adults and teens as they are familiar with that language

This case study has more analysis and you have linked what you are seeing and reading closer to the genre and at times the target audience. More on cover lines and sky line for the cover, also mise en scene throughout so costumes, props, location and lighting and how these are used to appeal to the target audience and fans of the genre. More on house style, continued colour scheme and language style too.
